In order to design and scale meaningful things, we need a way to talk specifically and rigorously about what’s meaningful. In this course, we develop just that.
We come together; we sense and name what we each find meaningful; and we build a shared language to discuss it precisely.
The Details
This is the first part of the School for Social Design. You’ll gain precision about what’s meaningful to you, so it can better guide your actions, exchanges, and collaborations. In units 2, 3, and 4, you’ll use this knowledge to create products that are meaningful to others.
- A 5 week introduction to naming and understanding your sources of meaning, $700
- 9 hours with a small group & instructor; 7 hours of additional small group practice.
- Plan to spend 5 hrs per week.

Why Take It?
You’ll be better able to catalogue and communicate your ideas about what’s meaningful. This has many benefits:
Build meaning-aligned teams.More
‣
Recognize a diversity of wisdom, from a wider variety of people.More
‣
Incorporate what’s meaningful daily, rather than hoping for meaning at the end of a long, draining process.More
‣
Discover that ideals which seemed vague are tangible and shared.More
‣
Recognize more quickly when you neglect something more meaningful, to fulfill expectations that are less meaningful.More
‣
Besides these benefits, you’ll have a better grasp of what’s meaningful to others, a key to creating meaningful products. We can help you with that in units 2, 3, and 4.
Some Sources of Meaning
Course Structure
- Personalized. Students take a kind of personality test at the beginning (based on where Chapter 1. Crowding Out occurs in their life). Based on those results, they have a version of the course that fits who they are.
- Direct instruction. The course has one instructor for every six students, and you spend nine hours with that instructor (and about the same amount of time in practice sessions with your group of six).
- Direct access. Joe Edelman, the author of the textbook and most of the games, is on call to all students for questions via telegram via direct messenger.
- Substantial. The revival is the result of six years of work on the course and textbook. So, you benefit from hundreds of students who’ve come before you and helped us make the course work.
